The United States Department of State has issued a worldwide travel alert, urging Americans—particularly those in the Middle East—to exercise heightened caution as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.
The advisory warns that Iran and affiliated groups may target US interests or locations linked to the United States overseas. It also highlights the growing risk of travel disruptions, including sudden airspace closures and security threats affecting US diplomatic missions in several countries.
The alert follows a sharp escalation in rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who reportedly issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that failure to comply could result in strikes on Iranian power infrastructure.
In response, Tehran has threatened sweeping retaliation, particularly targeting energy facilities across the region—raising fears of a broader conflict.
The State Department has also advised US citizens abroad to closely follow security updates from nearby embassies and consulates, and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides real-time alerts and guidance during emergencies.
