FUTA Threatens Industrial Action Over UGC Interference in University Administration
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Federation of University Teachers’ Unions (FUTA) Secretary, Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilanga Sinha, has warned that if the University Grants Commission (UGC) does not cease its undue influence and interference in university administration, the union will definitely initiate industrial action next week, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.

He further noted that while the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in universities has historically reflected the priorities of previous governments, positive measures have been taken under the new Act to address this issue.

However, Sinha highlighted a major concern in the new Act, which grants the authority to remove Deans and Heads of Departments at any time, describing it as a serious problem.

He added that although the Prime Minister had promised to take necessary steps after discussions with Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the implementation of these measures has been indefinitely delayed due to the influence of the Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
