France repatriates another group of illegal Sri Lankan migrants
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

France repatriated on Wednesday January 25, 38 Sri Lankan migrants who arrived illegally by boat on the French territory, Reunion Island on January 14, 2023. This return comes after the repatriation of 46 other migrants on January 13.

France will continue to implement a policy of combating illegal immigration, while applying the humanitarian principles of rescue at sea for people in distress. Expulsions from Reunion will continue as necessary, in compliance with French law and international law.

Smugglers mislead departing candidates about the opportunities that await them upon arrival and expose them, including sometimes children, to immense risks during the several months of the crossing on a fishing vessel barely 13m long, without any sanitary facilities, food and no ability to provide emergency care. The illegal immigrants often go into debt for years with these smugglers, usually realizing the scam of which they have been the object only after their departure and especially when they arrive.

The fight against human trafficking and smugglers is a priority for France, which works closely with the countries of departure to increase its efficiency. This embassy emphasizes in this respect the excellent operational cooperation that exists with Sri Lanka, in compliance with our respective legislations.
