The Police Commission has approved the re-appointment of former Senior Superintendent of Police, Shani Abeysekara, to the police service on a contract basis for a period of one year, effective from October 10.

Mr. Abeysekara is well-known as a key investigator in several high-profile criminal cases in Sri Lanka. He also previously served as the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

During his tenure, he led investigations into some of the most controversial cases in the country, including the murder of rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths from Colombo, the killing of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, the assassination of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, and the Rathupaswala shootings.

In addition to these cases, Mr. Abeysekara was involved in investigations of other notable crimes such as the Royal Park murder, the Angulana double murder, the Udatalawinna massacre, and the killing of Mohammed Siyam.
