Former professor of Peradeniya University, Atula Senaratne, says that due to the earthquakes happening near Sri Lanka, huge buildings in Colombo have been affected. The professor says this while commenting on the recent earthquake that hit Sri Lanka in the southeast sea area. Sri Lanka Latest News

“Recently, the shock that happened in the South-East Sea Region was felt in many parts of Sri Lanka. Especially for the Colombo area. The Western Province had felt this shock. That means that high-rise buildings in the Western Province can definitely be affected by the shocks in the South-Eastern region. Because the tremors occurring in the south-eastern region of Sri Lanka are felt, the tall buildings in those regions may be damaged. Therefore, one of the things we must do is to categorize new and old buildings in Sri Lanka, especially tall buildings.

In this classification, we can identify whether these buildings have been designed to match the geological conditions of the earth; It has also been designed to be suitable for earthquakes; Whether the foundations of those buildings have been created in the right way. After studying that and identifying those dangerous buildings, we sometimes have some methods to correct them. We can avoid the dangerous situation by correcting the buildings that can be repaired, blacklisting the buildings that cannot be repaired, or removing those buildings from service. I believe that Sri Lanka should pay attention to that situation now,” says the professor.
