Dear Sir,
Request for Information Regarding Unwarranted Raid on Private Property
I write on the instructions of my client, Mr. Sujeewa Senasinghe, of No. 3, Chelsea Gardens, Colombo 03 to formally address an incident that occurred on the evening of 02/11/2024. On or around 7:00 p.m., a group of eight individuals claiming to be officers from the Walana Anti Corruption Unit entered my client’s residence at the above address without prior notice or his knowledge. During this incident only my client’s domestic aide was present.
Without consent, the officers seized my client’s aide’s phone, instructing him not to inform my client of their presence. They then proceeded to inspect the premises, taking both photographs and video footage of the property. Later, my client was notified via a call from one of the officers that the purpose of the raid was based on information alleging possession of illegal LTTE uniforms at my client’s residence. However, media reports and the police spokesperson subsequently stated that the raid was, in fact, conducted to search for illegally assembled vehicles at the residence of my client.
These actions have caused considerable distress to my client, damaging his reputation and standing in the community. Given his position as a public figure, such actions are particularly harmful and may impact his professional and personal repute. Therefore, my client has directed me to seek clarification on the following points:
- What was the legal and factual basis for conducting the raid at my client’s residence on 02/11/ 2024?
- Please provide the names and official designations of the officers who participated in this raid.
- Did your unit obtain a court order prior to entering and searching my client’s property? If so, kindly provide a copy of this court order.
- Who provided the initial information that led to the decision to conduct a raid on my client’s residence?
- Who was the first complainant that led to the decision to conduct a raid on my client’s residence?
- What specific, credible information did the Anti Corruption Unit possess to justify this raid?
- Are there any ongoing court proceedings related to this matter? If so, please provide the case number and relevant details.?
These actions have caused undue distress to my client and have harmed his reputation in his capacity as a respected Attorney-at-law and former Minister. A prompt and thorough response is requested within seven days of the date of this letter. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation may compel my client to seek legal remedies to address the unauthorized intrusion.
Kindly acknowledge receipt of this letter and provide the requested details at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.
