Flooding in Vavuniya Submerges 100 Acres of Paddy Fields, Authorities Work to Repair Breached Tank Embankment

Farmers in the Vavuniya region report that approximately 100 acres of paddy fields in low-lying areas have been completely submerged due to flooding triggered by the breach of the Mattuvilankulam tank embankment.

The Vavuniya district has been experiencing heavy rainfall since the morning of the 26th, severely disrupting daily life. The Vavuniya Disaster Management Unit has issued warnings about the heightened risk of further flooding in the area.

In response to the breach, the Disaster Management Unit, alongside Army personnel, has initiated efforts to repair the damaged embankment. Their goal is to prevent water from continuing to flow into low-lying areas and causing additional flooding.

The Army has reported that temporary repairs using sandbags are underway but have been significantly hampered by the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Given the worsening situation, disaster management officials have urged residents in low-lying areas, particularly farmers, to exercise caution and remain vigilant.
