Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, says that when dates and postponements continue, the election becomes a joke. Joining a radio program.
“Talked to political parties. Talked to civil organizations. Talked to monitoring organizations. Talked to the government. Who else do we have to talk to? After talking to them, they also agree. They also say that this should be implemented. But mainly other resources are stuck. We have talked about that too. I have spoken with the Ministry of Finance. Talked to the government press. Who else is there to talk?
A date is announced, it is postponed again, another date is given, but when it is postponed again and then it becomes a joke. The date will be announced by our District Returning Officers. Then it is not good for them either. That’s why we asked the Prime Minister to intervene in the Cabinet to give us the money for this at least for a certain period of time. If that is granted, we can hold the election on that date.
Otherwise, there are several cases in court in this regard. “If the court gives a decision according to those cases and sets a date accordingly, we will arrange to hold the vote on that date,” said the chairman.
