It is reported that five people who commented on the arrest of comedian Natasha Edirisuriya at a press conference have been accused of contempt of court.
Journalists Tharindu Jayawardena and Tharindu Udavaragedara, lawyer Lakmali Hemachandra, social activists Vidarshana Kannangara and Bitro Fernando had given comments in this press conference.
These allegations were made when the case against Natasha Edirisuriya, who is said to have insulted Buddhism as per the reports, was heard before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
The lawyer who appeared for Prabhat Madhubhasana, the convener of the organization called ‘Sihala Ravaya’, informed the court that the press conference held by these people after the arrest of Natasha Edrisuriya was an act of insulting the court.
Presenting the photographs of the press conference, the lawyer has stated that the demand made in the press conference to release Natasha Edrisuriya from all charges is considered as an act of insult to the court.
The lawyer informed the court that a complaint has been submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in this regard, but no action has been taken so far.
Taking into account the facts presented, Fort Magistrate Thilina has informed the Criminal Investigation Department to start an investigation regarding the statements of the five accused.
