Five Arrested for Throwing Water at Officials During Galle Municipal Council Meeting

Five individuals, including an opposition Member of Parliament, were arrested for unruly behavior and using criminal force to obstruct the work of the Galle Municipal Council by throwing water at the municipal secretary and other officials during a special general meeting.

Those taken into custody include two UNP municipal councillors, a Podujana Eksath Peramuna municipal councillor, and two Samagi Jana Balawegaya municipal councillors of the Galle Municipal Council. They are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court today (31) after their statements were recorded.

The incident occurred yesterday (30), when opposition members protested against the council secretary and officials as the Mayor opened the council, creating a tense situation. The dispute arose over the manner in which the secretary and officials entered the council chamber following disagreements during the budget vote held earlier.

Despite the tension, the Mayor proceeded with the council’s agenda. However, upon announcing the upcoming committee meeting, a group of Joint Opposition members threw water bottles at the secretariat area.

As the situation became difficult to control, the Mayor adjourned the council for 30 minutes. During this period, the opposition members continued their disruptive behavior, shouting and creating further unrest.
