The farmers of the Maha Kandarawa movement are alleging that by opening the Anuradhapura North Water Supply drinking water project without preparing a system to get water to the Maha Kandarawa Reservoir, the farmers of the Maha Kandarawa movement will be rendered helpless.Sri Lanka Latest News

This drinking water project was opened today (15) amid public opposition by a Japanese delegation including President Ranil Wickramasinghe. After the opening, 21 people who protested were also called to discuss this issue with the President.

More than five hundred farmers from more than fifteen farmers’ organizations participated in this, representing the United Farmers’ Organization.

The people who protested said that they have no objection even if the water of this drinking water project is taken to Jaffna, and that a system should be prepared to get water to the Maha Kanadarava Reservoir.

At present, 9000 acres of paddy fields under the Maha Kandarawa Reservoir are harvested with only rainwater, and the Mahakandarawa Reservoir, which was filled with rain after the heavy rains, will dry up within a week due to the opening of this water project.

Under this water scheme, a water capacity of 6700 cubic meters per day is to be obtained from the Maha Kanadarava Reservoir and the opening of this drinking water scheme without a way to get water to the reservoir will leave more than 5000 families without a way to go.

They said that a promise was made to open this water scheme after providing water from Mora Gaha Kanda Reservoir to Maha Kandarawa Reservoir through Eruwewa, but opening this drinking water scheme is a fool’s errand when the work on the canal has not yet been completed. .

Here, some farmers said that the security forces should leave our lands immediately. They said that this act is like a sister’s act.
