Acting on a complaint received by the Consumer Affairs Authority, officials recently (3rd) raided an illegal canned fish manufacturing site located in Doongalpitiya, Talahena, Negombo.
Investigations revealed that the canned fish was being produced and packaged in unhygienic and irregular conditions. The operation had been using a falsified standard certification purporting to be issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, along with a fake manufacturing company name to deceive consumers.
During the raid, authorities seized approximately 700 packs of substandard canned fish—each weighing 425 grams—that had been counterfeited and were ready for market distribution. A lorry prepared for the transportation of these goods was also confiscated.
Preliminary inquiries indicated that products from this illicit operation had already been distributed across Gampaha and its surrounding areas over the past two months.
Further investigations are currently ongoing, and legal action will be initiated against those involved once inquiries are concluded.
