A former staff member of the personal team of ex-Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara, is under investigation in connection with a human trafficking case. The case allegedly involves the illegal use of premises belonging to the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau, including the Ministry of Labour’s Narahenpita headquarters and the ground floor of the bureau’s district office in Galle.
The individual in question, Bhagya Kariyawasam, who served as a coordinating secretary to the former minister, is accused of illegally profiting by offering employment opportunities in Israel and South Korea.
Reports indicate that Kariyawasam, along with other suspects linked to the trafficking network, is currently missing.
A spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau has also implicated Thisara Nanayakkara, identified as the former minister’s brother, in the trafficking operations. It is alleged that Thisara Nanayakkara utilized the Galle district office premises for illegal activities.
Furthermore, bureau sources have revealed that Deshapriya Liyanage, another coordinating secretary to the former minister, is believed to have been involved in the human trafficking scheme.
