Evan Papageorgiou has been appointed as the new Head of Mission to Sri Lanka at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), succeeding Peter Breuer, who had held the position for an extended period.
Peter Breuer assumed the role during a critical juncture in 2022–2023, when Sri Lanka faced the most severe economic crisis in its history. At that time, Sri Lanka initiated engagement with the IMF, leading to the implementation of a comprehensive support program. In March 2023, as a key milestone in this collaboration, the IMF approved a nearly $3 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) to support the country’s economic recovery. Mr. Breuer led the first three reviews of the program, playing a vital role in its initial implementation and monitoring.
Evan Papageorgiou, the newly appointed Mission Chief to Sri Lanka, previously served as Deputy Chief of the IMF’s Asia Pacific Department. He brings with him extensive experience in economic policy and operations across the region.
Meanwhile, a preliminary discussion concerning the fourth review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) between Sri Lanka and the IMF was held in Colombo yesterday (07), under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The meeting was attended by both the incoming Head of Mission, Evan Papageorgiou, and the outgoing official, Peter Breuer.
