Mr. Sanjeeva Dhammika, National Secretary of the Electricity Users Association, told ‘Mawrata’ that while there is a possibility of reducing the electricity bill by 33%, reducing it by only 21.9% will not reduce the living burden of the consumers, and the government should take action against the officials of the Electricity Board who committed this injustice. He also mentioned that his union will take legal action against it.
He says that although the electricity board made a profit of 61.2 billion rupees last year, the concerned officials have done injustice to the consumers by forgetting about that profit.
Pointing out that they were prepared to give the people a relief of 3.34% earlier, the association has stated that even though this kind of electricity bill reduction was done based on the impact of the public opinion survey conducted on the 15th of last month, it is not enough.
Mr. Dhammika said that the electricity bill was increased by 60% in January of last year, it was reduced to 14% on July 1st and then increased by 18% on October 19th.
He says that people were even tempted to mortgage their gold ornaments to pay the electricity bills due to that situation.
Mr. Sanjeeva Dhammika also said that according to reports, the electricity of about 10 lakh customers has been disconnected due to non-payment of electricity bills.
