The Election Commission points out that its commission does not have any legal authority to resolve the internal problems within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Sri Lanka Latest News

It was reported that the decisions and documents given to the Election Commission by the Political Committee of that party were discussed by its members yesterday (18).

On the 8th of last year, the party’s political committee met under the chairmanship of Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva, the party’s senior vice president, and appointed Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva as the new acting president of the party, and authorized Mr. Duminda Dissanayake to act as the secretary general.

After Mr. Duminda Dissanayake handed over the information and documents related to these appointments to the Election Commission, the Acting General Secretary of the Party Mr. Sarathy Dushmantha Mitrapala also filed objections before the Commission regarding the new appointments.

Accordingly, the Election Commission which met yesterday had focused on the matters presented by two parties of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

As the Election Commission has no legal authority to resolve the internal problems that have arisen within the Freedom Party within the normal legal scope and procedure, the Commission is of the opinion that the existing problems should be resolved by the activists of the party through the courts.

A spokesperson said that the Election Commission has no legal authority to intervene or take action in any party’s internal crisis.

Even now, the crisis regarding the positions and parties of the Freedom Party is being examined before the court, so the Election Commission is only able to accept the orders or recommendations given by it.

However, the Election Commission has further stated that if the internal crises of the Freedom Party continue even after the announcement of an election in the future, a decision will have to be taken only under the election process considering whether they will be nominated.
