Chairman of the Election Commission, Ananda Ratnayake, stated that a letter has been sent to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in response to his recent remarks made at two political meetings. During these events, the President pledged financial support to local government institutions that align with the National People’s Power.
According to Ratnayake, the Election Commission took action following complaints lodged by election observation organizations. These organizations highlighted that the President’s comments may violate provisions of the Local Government Elections Act, specifically Sections 92C (Undue Influence) and 82D (Promises of Maximum Advantage).
In his letter to the Secretary to the President, the Election Commission Chairman requested that the President refrain from making such statements, as they could potentially lead to undue political influence.
The controversial remarks were made during political meetings held in Kantale and Mannar, where President Dissanayake assured that financial support would be directed to local government bodies affiliated with the National People’s Power.
