Minister of Tourism and Sports Harin Fernando’s statements about an October 5 election date were directly refuted by Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mr. R.M.A.L. Ratnayake.

Mr Ratnayake emphasized that neither the cabinet nor the government has the authority to set the election schedule, stating, “The members of the commission will meet independently to decide the election date from July 17.”

He further clarified, “We will announce the date publicly without needing approval from any external agency, including the Cabinet or the President.”

Ratnayake explained that the election process can only commence after September 17, followed by a mandatory four to six-week preparation period.

He added that the nomination dates would be set within 17-21 days after the announcement of the election date.
