With heavy rainfall anticipated across several districts, the Election Commission and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) are actively preparing for potential adverse weather conditions that could impact election day.

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake informed the media that the Election Commission has already identified areas at risk of possible disaster situations on election day.

“We are taking preliminary steps in collaboration with relevant government institutions and have implemented a process to address and minimize these challenges,” he said.

Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Athula Karunanayake, warned that rainfall could reach up to 100 mm in the Northern, North Central, North Western, and Central provinces on Thursday, the scheduled election day.

He added that the Meteorology Department will provide constant updates to the Election Special Operations Room regarding weather forecasts from Tuesday through Saturday, covering the entire election period.
