Mr. Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, said that the local government elections will be held before March 20.
A group of members of the Freedom People’s Assembly met the Election Commission’s chairman, Mr. Lawyer Nimal Punchihewa this morning (12) and in that meeting, the Chairman of the Election Commission gave the above assurance.
He mentioned that the commission is against postponing the local government election and that the commission has received the authority to announce the holding of the local government election after September.
He mentioned that the provincial councils are functioning today under officers and the commission does not agree to deploy officers to control the places where people’s representatives should be.
The chairman said that the provincial councils had disappeared but that they had been made to disappear.
