It is reported that Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has sent a letter to the Legislative Assembly not to take steps to give the post of Inspector General of Police to persons who have been seriously accused of not taking action to prevent the Easter attack.
It is also reported that he has sent this letter to all the 9 members representing the Constituent Assembly.
The current Inspector General of Police Mr. CD Wickramaratne is scheduled to retire within this week and the new Inspector General of Police has to be nominated by the Legislative Council.
Some media have reported that the President has already proposed 3 names for the post of the new Inspector General of Police.
Accordingly, since the responsibility of making the final decision rests with the Constituent Assembly, the Cardinals have informed all the representatives of the Constituent Assembly through their letter to appoint an unaccused person.
The Legislative Assembly consists of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Mr. Sajith Premadasa, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Sagara Kariyawasam, Dr. Pratap Ramanujam, Dr. Dilkushi Anula Wijesundara, Dr. Dinesha Samararatne.
