Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s ruling party Member of Parliament Mr. Jayantha Katagoda presented a private member’s motion to Parliament on Wednesday (5) requesting that the Minister of Local Government be authorized to extend the tenure of local government without elections. Sri Lanka Latest News

Speaking to the ‘Morning’ newspaper yesterday (6), Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that there is a legal possibility to extend the term of office of local government bodies through passing a bill, but it is not ethical.

“We do not believe this bill will go that far. It is unethical to extend the term of office of local government councilors and councilors in this way when the people have given them power for only four years. Some former local government councilors and councilors have submitted nominations for the local government elections.”
