Deshamanya Bradman Weerakoon Passes Away at 94: A Legacy of Service to Sri Lanka’s Leaders

Senior civil servant and highly respected public administrator, Deshamanya Bradman Weerakoon, has passed away at the age of 94.

Mr. Weerakoon began his early education at Holy Cross College, Kalutara, and continued his secondary education at St. Thomas’ College, Guruthalawa. He later enrolled at the University of Peradeniya, where he graduated with honors in Economics and Sociology.

He was also a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue a Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology at the University of Michigan, USA.

Joining the Sri Lanka Civil Service in 1954, Bradman Weerakoon served in multiple regions across the country. He went on to become the Secretary to Prime Minister Sir John Kotelawala and rendered remarkable service as the Secretary to seven elected Prime Ministers and two Presidents, continuing in this role until 2002.

His lifelong dedication to public service has left a lasting legacy in Sri Lanka’s administrative history.
