Professor Wasantha Atu Korala from the Department of Economics and Statistics at Peradeniya University has highlighted a significant decline in government school enrollment over the past six years. According to Professor Korala, the number of students enrolled in government schools has dropped by 332,084 from 2018 to 2023.
Additionally, he reported a reduction in the number of government schools, which has decreased by 79 during the same period. The professor also noted a decrease in the number of teachers across these schools, with a reduction of 9,547 teachers in the last six years. Despite these reductions in government education facilities, the number of private schools has seen a modest increase of fifteen during the same timeframe.
