He was then produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today, where he was ordered to be granted bail.
Darshana Handungoda was arrested on the charge of failing to give a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department regarding the release of a video showing violence on social media.
The Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department had started an investigation against social media activist Darshana Handungoda for releasing a video on social media showing the violence that took place in front of Araliagaha Mandiraya on the night of May 09 during the struggle last year.
Later, on May 31 last year, the Criminal Investigation Department recorded statements from Darshan Handungoda for 04 hours in relation to that investigation.
Although he was informed to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department on January 20 this year to record his statements for further investigations, he did not appear before the department that day.
Accordingly, the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, preventing Darshan Handungoda from leaving the country, received a foreign travel ban from the Fort Magistrate Court.
However, in the meantime, Darshana Handungoda had left the country without informing the court.
Accordingly, while returning to the island from Dubai this morning, Darshan was arrested at Katunayake Airport by the immigration officials of Handungoda.
