The recent severe weather conditions triggered by a cyclone have caused widespread flooding across Sri Lanka, affecting 401,590 individuals from 132,110 families in 23 districts, according to Brigadier Kumara Perera, Director of Emergency Operations at the Disaster Management Center.
As of Friday (29th), the disaster has claimed 13 lives, while two individuals remain missing.
In response to the crisis, the police and tri-forces, under the supervision of Divisional Secretaries, have extended support to 27,717 individuals from 8,675 affected families, providing them with shelter in 279 safe locations.
Brigadier Perera further noted that all personnel from the Army’s 58th Division have been mobilized to assist the relief efforts, following directives from the President.
A coordinated rescue operation involving 239 boats and 210 teams from the Navy, Army, and Police has been launched to evacuate victims and transport them to safety.
The floods have caused extensive property damage, with 102 houses completely destroyed and 2,096 homes sustaining partial damage.
Authorities continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by this devastating natural disaster.
