- ASP to lead SL’s team
In the wake of several underworld figures being taken into custody by the Dubai law enforcement agencies, the Police Department awaits notification from Dubai Police to dispatch a special Police team to repatriate organised crime-related suspects, The Daily Morning learns.
It was earlier reported that the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) was planning to send a team of officers to Dubai in the coming days to aid in the extradition of several prominent organised crime figures, including, a suspect known by the alias ‘Uragaha Michael’ who were recently taken into custody of the Dubai Police earlier this month.
Against this backdrop, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon yesterday (17) told The Daily Morning that a special Police team is already selected for the particular purpose, but the Sri Lankan Police has to receive a notification from the Dubai law enforcement agencies asking for local law enforcement assistance to extradite suspects.
Tennakoon also said that all the measures have been taken by the CID to send these officers to Dubai as soon as the Police Department receives the notification from the Dubai law enforcement agencies. “The Police team is already formed. But, we have to receive their (Dubai Police) notification to proceed with the plan,” he said.
Last month (February) seven Sri Lankan organised crime members were arrested in Dubai after an altercation between them at a nightclub. It is learnt that said team of CID detectives is to be directed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the division.
