Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (30) ordered the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to provide the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with the remaining account records that have not yet been submitted, in connection with the investigation into the 2015 Central Bank bond scam under the Money Laundering Act. The investigating officer informed the court that a previous court order had already directed the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to provide several account records related to the incident to the CID.
While certain account records have been submitted to the CID in compliance with that order, the investigating officer noted that additional account records belonging to Perpetual Telecommunications Company and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka are still required for investigative purposes.
The court issued the new directive after considering a request made by the Financial Investigation Division of the CID seeking an order to compel the Central Bank to submit the remaining documents.
After reviewing the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to provide all accounting records requested by the Financial Investigation Division of the CID related to the incident.
The court further revealed that seven suspects have been named in the case, including Perpetual Treasuries Limited, company director Arjun Aloysius, and former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran, noting that the Attorney General has already filed a case against them before a three-member Special High Court Judges’ Bench in connection with this crime.
