The Sunday Times newspaper has reported that Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, the President of the Court of Appeal (CA), is preparing to step down from his position.
This decision comes in light of the National People’s Power (NPP) government’s plans to introduce an impeachment motion against him.
Justice Karunaratne is expected to submit his resignation by the end of this month.
It is noteworthy that he was already scheduled to retire on June 16 this year, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 63 for appellate judges.
A deputy minister confirmed to the Sunday Times yesterday that the government intends to proceed with the impeachment motion. The motion is reportedly based on concerns regarding Justice Karunaratne’s recent performance.
