The Court of Appeal today (17) ruled to dismiss, without a hearing, the writ petition filed by Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon, who sought an interim injunction to prevent the execution of the Matara Magistrate’s Court order for his arrest. The arrest is linked to the 2023 shooting incident in the Weligama area of Matara.
Following this ruling, the Court of Appeal bench also directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take immediate steps to arrest Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon and present him before the court.
The writ petition, filed by Mr. Tennakoon, was taken up for consideration before the Court of Appeal on the 12th of this month.
The verdict was delivered by the Court of Appeal bench, comprising Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohamed Lafar Tahir, and Justice Sarath Dissanayake, this morning.
Meanwhile, despite the Police Media Division’s statement issued yesterday claiming that an agreement had been reached not to arrest the six police officers involved in the incident, the judge clarified that no such decision had been made by the court.
