The COPE Committee has been informed that between 10% and 20% of the revenue collected by highway cashiers is being stolen. This fraud was first uncovered during a strike by the cashiers when a comparison was made with the income collected by army personnel who were temporarily filling in for them.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Highways informed the COPE Committee that despite further investigations confirming the fraud, there is no way to dismiss the fraudulent officials. This is due to a lack of available personnel to replace them.
Nineteen cashiers suspected of being involved in the fraud have been identified. Additionally, it has been reported that these fraudsters have been tampering with CCTV camera systems and cutting wires to facilitate their schemes.
