The Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority, Hemantha Samarakoon, announced that a report detailing the rice stocks held by the country’s rice mill owners will be submitted to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today (28th).
Following directives from President Dissanayake last week, the Consumer Affairs Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, was tasked with urgently providing an account of rice stocks held by rice mill owners to enable swift action against rising rice prices.
In response, a survey was conducted on October 26th and 27th, focusing on rice mills located in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts.
However, Chairman Samarakoon noted the logistical challenges of surveying rice mills nationwide within a two-day period, as there are hundreds of mills, including more than 200 small-scale operations in some districts alone. Given the Authority’s limited personnel, Samarakoon plans to request additional time from the President to complete a comprehensive survey across all regions.
