Consumer Affairs Authority Raids 23 Supermarkets, Uncovers Major Violations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As part of a special raid program launched by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to protect consumers from unfair market practices during the festive season, inspections were recently conducted at 23 supermarkets across the country.

During these raids, officials uncovered multiple violations, including the failure to display product prices, the sale of expired goods, pricing discrepancies, misleading consumers, and the sale of products without mandatory labeling and information.

Over the past year, investigations have led to legal action against 172 supermarket branches operating within major retail networks. Courts have imposed fines exceeding Rs. 6.5 million on these establishments after finding them guilty of violating consumer protection regulations.

The CAA continues to conduct routine market inspections and supermarket raids to curb unethical practices. Notably, 16 of the supermarkets found in violation during this latest operation belong to well-known retail chains.

In light of these findings, the Consumer Affairs Authority strongly advises consumers to carefully check expiration dates and essential product information before making purchases, particularly in supermarkets.
