The inaugural meeting of the Colombo Municipal Council, following this year’s local government elections in which no single party secured a majority, officially commenced today (16) at the Colombo City Hall.
A gazette notification authorizing the meeting was recently issued by the Local Government Commissioner. As per procedure, the first agenda item is the election of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
According to the final results of the local government elections, the National People’s Party secured 48 out of the 117 council seats. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (Samagi People’s Party) followed with 29 seats. The United National Party (UNP) won 13 seats, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) secured 5 seats, and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress claimed 4 seats. Sarvajana Balaya obtained 2 seats, while the remaining seats were distributed among other political parties and independent groups.
As no party achieved the required majority—over 50% of the total membership—an election is being held during the inaugural session to appoint the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the council.
