Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara has confirmed that there is no legal requirement to pay a parking fee immediately after a vehicle is stopped.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he stated that the first 10 minutes of parking are free.
Expanding on the matter, Nanayakkara emphasized:
“There is no law mandating an immediate parking fee as soon as a vehicle stops. The first 10 minutes are free of charge. A ticket can be issued based on the duration of parking, and if it exceeds 10 minutes, a fee of Rs. 70 is applicable. Charging beyond this amount is not permitted. Additionally, we do not impose parking charges on Poya days and special holidays.”
