The Colombo High Court has ordered the release of former MP Hirunika Premachandra, who had been sentenced to three years of hard labor. The decision was made by Judge Amal Ranaraja.
Premachandra was granted bail on two bonds: one for Rs 50,000 and another for Rs 500,000. The judge also imposed a travel restriction, prohibiting her from leaving the country.
Hirunika Premachandra’s lawyer, Nalinda Indatissa, represented her in court.
On December 21, 2015, Premachandra was convicted on 18 charges, including the abduction and wrongful imprisonment of Amila Priyanka, a shop worker from Dematagoda. She was sentenced to three years in prison, hard labor, and fined Rs 360,000.
Following an appeal against her conviction, this recent decision was made in response to a bail request filed by her legal team.
