The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a special investigation today (08) into the theft of several priceless antiquities from the Senarath Paranavithana Museum in Peradeniya. The inquiry is being conducted with the knowledge and involvement of the university’s governing authority.

According to internal sources, five out of nine invaluable ivory carvings with significant artefact value have been reported missing from the museum’s collection.

Additionally, the CID has initiated this investigation based on specific information received about irregularities at the Senarath Paranavithana Museum. These include the misplacement of ancient books and other artefacts of historical importance.

Investigators are also examining the potential involvement of former Vice-Chancellors and influential politicians in this national crime, which has drawn widespread attention and concern.
