The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has decided to file action against Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody over corruption complaints related to the misappropriation of funds during his tenure at the Fertiliser Corporation in 2015, a senior official confirmed.

The official said that the case is being processed in the order in which the files were received.

According to The Sunday Times, following the decision to proceed against Minister Jayakody, the case file was sent to CIABOC Director General Ranga Dissanayake, who has referred it to the Commission’s legal division for further action.

So far, CIABOC has directed that legal action be filed in connection with 69 cases forwarded to the legal division. Minister Jayakody’s case has been recorded as File No. 49, while indictments have already been completed in 25 other cases.

The action will be filed in the High Court against Minister Jayakody and two others on charges of misappropriating Rs. 8 million.

At the time, Mr. Jayakody served as the head of the tender board that awarded a particular contract which later came under scrutiny.

Investigations into the tender were launched after concerns were raised over payment procedures and the placement of a bond. The Bribery Commission resumed inquiries based on findings from previous investigations into the alleged misappropriation.
