The Finance Minister / Secretary of the Philippines Benjamin E. Diokono says that Sri Lanka must not despair in the face of its present economic situation, but must be an optimist to overcome the challenges

Recalling the economic challenges the Philippines faced after the COVID pandemic, the Philippines Finance Minister in an EXCLUSIVE interview with News 1st’s Zulfick Farzan said sound structural reforms allowed his country to overcome challenges.

He said that China should consider forgiving part of the debt offered to Sri Lanka, if not the economy of the island nation will continue to ‘run behind.’

“It has been done before, and can be done in this kind of environment,” he told News 1st on Tuesday (10) on the sidelines of the 2023 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Morocco.

He said that Sri Lanka must evaluate its domestic resources mobilization, and it that is done, it would be easy for Sri Lanka to get support from the IMF, World Bank and regional partners.
