On a bright afternoon at the ITC Ratnadipa in Colombo, the air buzzed with anticipation as delegates from over 45 countries gathered for the inaugural Innovation Island Summit. High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, took the stage, delivering remarks that underscored the significance of global collaboration, economic transformation, and the deep-rooted ties between India and Sri Lanka.

A Historic Gathering Welcoming the esteemed audience, Jha acknowledged the presence of key figures, including Sri Lankan President H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister. The event also boasted an address from Shri Amitabh Kant, an architect of India’s renowned “Incredible India” campaign and a key figure in the historic G20 Summit of 2023.

Sri Lanka at a Crossroads Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s journey, Jha highlighted the country’s evolving political landscape, shaped by recent elections and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis. He noted that these challenges had catalyzed a growing aspiration for transformation among Sri Lankans.

Thematic Focus: Blue, Green, and Chrome The summit’s central themes—Blue, Green, and Chrome—resonated deeply with Sri Lanka’s future ambitions:

  • Blue: As an island nation, Sri Lanka’s maritime resources offer vast potential for economic and environmental growth.
  • Green: Given its vulnerability to climate change, Sri Lanka is uniquely positioned to harness green energy and play a role in regional sustainability efforts.
  • Chrome: Digital transformation is essential for Sri Lanka to overcome inefficiencies and position itself within the emerging geo-technological landscape.

Embracing Global Connectivity Jha emphasized that Sri Lanka must remain globally connected to seize opportunities in trade, investment, tourism, and technology. He expressed confidence that the Innovation Island Summit would foster a deeper understanding of global trends, facilitating Sri Lanka’s engagement with the world.

India and Sri Lanka: A Partnership for Progress Reaffirming India’s commitment to Sri Lanka, Jha spoke of the Neighborhood First and SAGAR approach, emphasizing solidarity and shared prosperity. From connectivity and digitization to energy cooperation, India and Sri Lanka’s partnership spans multiple domains, rooted in historical ties and a common future.

As the summit unfolded, it became clear that Innovation Island was more than just a conference—it was a platform for envisioning a new era of collaboration, growth, and technological advancement. In concluding his address, Jha expressed hope that this gathering would become an annual tradition, further strengthening the bonds between Sri Lanka, India, and the global community.

With optimism and purpose, the Innovation Island Summit set sail toward a future brimming with opportunities.
