Challenging the Narrative: Opposition Leaders Deny Allegations of Evading Responsibility Amidst Crisis, Assert Commitment to Presidential Race
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Amid the crisis, there appears to be a void in leadership, prompting remarks from President Ranil Wickramasinghe, attributing sole responsibility to himself while accusing others of evasion. Such assertions cannot be left unaddressed, as the integrity of the highest office demands transparency.

Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balavega and Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National Jana Balavega have been accused of shirking from the challenge, despite their ideological differences. However, it is pertinent to note that both have expressed willingness to engage under different circumstances, suggesting a narrative of fear and avoidance is unfounded.

As we approach a critical juncture, with only 25 weeks remaining until the dawn of the New Year, speculation surrounding the impending appointment of the 9th Executive President must be dispelled. The constitutional mandate for the presidential election is clear, with the Election Commission expected to announce the election within 93 days, followed by the call for nominations within 114 days thereafter, setting the stage for a new leadership structure.

Former Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya’s public stance against election postponement underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles. With the imminent transition of power, it is imperative that no individual perceives the nation as their personal domain.

Furthermore, as we transition astrologically from Pisces to Aries, a symbolic shift, it is incumbent upon former leaders to uphold political decorum and refrain from partisan engagements. The misuse of public funds for party propaganda undermines the essence of democratic governance.

Reflecting on the historical precedent set by former President J.R. Jayawardena, who refrained from active politics post-presidency, there is a call for incumbent and aspiring leaders alike to emulate such statesmanship. Let us collectively embrace a new political ethos, one that respects the taxpayers’ contribution and fosters a culture of public service over self-interest.
