The Constitutional Council (CC) will on Tuesday review the nomination of Senior Deputy Auditor General L.S.P. Jayaratne, whose name has been resubmitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for the position of Auditor General, following an earlier rejection.

Jayaratne’s nomination comes after the initial submission and subsequent withdrawal of Open University bursar W.M.K.P.A. Wickremesinghe’s name.

The CC is scheduled to convene at 2 pm on Tuesday to deliberate on the President’s nominee.

On Friday, the CC met with its new civil society representatives—Austin Fernando, Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne, and Ranjith Ariyaratna—but no decision was made regarding the Auditor General appointment.

The post has been vacant for nine months since former Auditor General Chulantha Wickremaratna retired. The next most senior officer, Dharmapala Gammanpila, was appointed as Acting Auditor General but was not nominated for the permanent position. His name was later submitted to the CC for consideration as Acting Auditor General.

Subsequently, three other candidates were nominated for the post but were not approved by the CC.

This week, the Mahanayaka Theras urged the government to consider Mr. Gammanpila’s name for the Auditor General role, citing his seniority.
