Bureau of Health guides how to stop the post-flood situation from rapidly getting worse.

The Health Promotion Bureau has issued a set of guidelines for people in flood-prone areas. Sri Lanka Latest News

It also states that you should avoid walking or swimming in floodwaters as they may contain harmful bacteria and debris that can cause injuries.

Also, the Health Promotion Bureau has informed to try to wear rubber boots and gloves whenever possible to prevent infections such as leptospirosis or rat fever when travelling through floods.

Don’ts:

1. Avoid flood water as much as possible: Do not walk or swim in flood water. It can contain harmful bacteria and debris that can cause injury.

2. Do not eat flood-damaged food: Do not eat vegetables from flooded areas and throw away food from flooded areas.

3. Avoid exposure of children to flooding as much as possible: Keep children and pets away from contaminated water to prevent illness.

4. Don’t ignore symptoms: If you feel sick, don’t delay in seeking medical attention.

5. Avoid using dirty water: Do not use flood water for drinking, cooking or bathing.

What to follow:

1. Drink only safe water: Use boiled water or bottled water that has been boiled for at least 1 minute to avoid water borne diseases. Minimize the use of water from flooded wells as much as possible.

2. Stay informed: Stay updated with local news and weather forecasts.

3. Destruction of mosquito breeding sites: Flood water can increase mosquito breeding. Therefore, identify places where water may have collected around your home and remove them.

4. Wear protective clothing: Try to wear rubber boots and gloves whenever possible to prevent infections such as leptospirosis or rat flu when wading through floodwaters.

5. Store food safely: To prevent food contamination, store food in areas that are not subject to flooding or store food in water-tight containers.

6. Wash your hands: Always wash your hands with soap especially before eating or preparing food.

7. Seek medical advice: Go to the nearest government hospital if you or a family member shows symptoms of illness.
