Brandix, a well-known brand in Sri Lanka, has closed its Kahawatta garment factory, according to the workers’ unions.
It is a factory where more than 2000 workers worked.
Earlier, the media had reported that several factories belonging to the same company had been closed and to prevent the closure of the Kahawatta factory from being disclosed, its employees have been assigned to the Nivithigala Brandix garment factory, said the employees’ unions.
Due to the lack of orders due to the global economic situation, there is a situation of continuous closure of garment factories and in the next 5 years there is a possibility that the Brandix company will leave the country and thousands of jobs will be lost.
However, when asked about this, the Brandix Group stated that the Kahawatta garment factory was merged with the Nivithigala factory as per a prior plan to provide more efficient service to its global buyers.
Also, a spokesperson of the Brandix Group stated that a voluntary retirement system was implemented for the employees who wanted to retire voluntarily and it was done entirely based on the employees’ wishes.
Also, the spokesperson of the group said that the rumors carried by some people that Brandix Group has opened new factories in Bangladesh are completely false and stated that the Brandix factory in Bangladesh was built 13 years ago.
Also, commenting on the propaganda that five Brandix garment factories have been closed, he mentioned that such a thing did not happen at all and only the Welisara factory was closed according to the company’s wishes.
