With her death, it is reported that the number of rabies deaths in Jaffna has increased to 5 during the year so far.
A 62-year-old woman named Mahendran Shanti from Vannarpannai area of Jaffna has died.
It is reported that she was bitten by a pet dog at home, and about two weeks later, she fell ill and died after being admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
Forensic Medical Officer Namasivayam Premkumar conducted the post-mortem examination of the deceased woman at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and it was concluded that the cause of the woman’s death was the ingestion of rabies bacteria and destruction of the internal organs.
About 2,500 stray dogs are roaming in various places in Jaffna, and the number of rabies cases in Jaffna is increasing because they bite people on the road, health officials say.
