The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has issued a statement regarding remarks made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at a recent May Day rally.
In its statement, the BASL said it is deeply concerned about the President’s comments relating to a court decision scheduled to be delivered on May 25.
The association pointed out that the President’s statement suggesting that people would be able to “brag” about the decision once it is delivered creates a perception of interference in the judicial process.
According to the BASL, such remarks could undermine public confidence in the independence of the judiciary.
The statement further noted that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka remains committed to ensuring the independence and integrity of the judiciary and will take all necessary steps to protect and safeguard it.
