The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has raised serious concern over recent comments and predictions made by individuals and YouTubers on social media regarding court decisions, warning that such actions could undermine the rule of law and erode public confidence in the judicial system.
In a statement issued today, the BASL noted that these remarks have been directed at matters falling under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the judiciary, both of which are independent institutions.
The Judicial Service Commission—comprising the Chief Justice and two senior Supreme Court judges—holds responsibility for the appointments, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary control of High Court judges and other judicial officers.
Emphasizing the need to safeguard judicial independence from external pressures, the BASL warned that attempts to influence court outcomes through public commentary pose a direct threat to due process.
The statement further stressed that individuals engaging in such conduct may face legal consequences under Article 111(C)(1) and (2) of the Constitution, as such actions could amount to interference with the judiciary and are punishable under the law.
