The Attorney General informed the Colombo High Court today (July 4) that objections will be filed regarding the request for bail made by former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra, who is serving a three-year prison sentence with hard labour.
This bail request was considered today before Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja.
During the proceedings, the judge questioned the state counsel whether there would be objections filed against this bail request.
In response, the state counsel stated that the Attorney General intends to file objections and that they expect to submit these objections in writing.
Since the Deputy Solicitor General handling this case was attending another trial at the Gampaha High Court, the state counsel requested the court to grant time for the submission of the objections.
Accordingly, the High Court judge granted time for the Attorney General to submit the objections and ordered the bail request be called again on July 11.
Hirunika Premachandra’s Appeal to the Court
Former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra has appealed to the court, requesting to be acquitted and released from her three-year prison sentence. During the proceedings, she submitted an appeal petition to the Colombo High Court to be referred to the Court of Appeal. She also previously requested the Colombo High Court to release her on bail pending the appeal.
President’s Counsel Nalinda Indatissa, appearing on behalf of Hirunika Premachandra, stated before the court that she has filed an appeal against the sentence imposed on her. Considering the nature of her sentence and the fact that she has three children, the President’s Counsel requested the court to issue an order to release her on bail.
