It has been reported that the Attorney General has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to inform the Mount Lavinia Magistrate that no further legal action will be taken against the three individuals previously named as suspects in the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga. As a result, they are to be released.
In a letter dated the 27th, the Attorney General directed the CID to update him on the court’s response within 14 days after notifying the Magistrate’s Court of this decision.
The suspects recommended for release are Army Staff Sergeant Prem Ananda Udalagama, Sub-Inspector Tissasiri Sugathapala, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Prasanna Nanayakkara.
Meanwhile, discussions on social media regarding this decision have intensified, with many expressing concerns that past state-related crimes may never be fully uncovered. Additionally, various documents and related information are being widely circulated online.
