Attorney General Announces Retirement After Being Rejected Twice

Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam has announced that he will retire from the position of Attorney General.Sri Lanka Latest News

The recommendation made by the President to extend his service period by six months was not approved by the Constitutional Council on two occasions.

The Constitutional Council met again yesterday afternoon to reconsider the recommendation made by the President to extend the service period of Mr. Sanjay Rajaratnam.

The meeting started at around 6 pm at the Speaker’s official residence and lasted about two hours.

A member of the Constitutional Council stated that it was decided that the Council does not have the power to approve an extension of the Attorney General’s service after the age of 60 years.

Accordingly, the decision of the Constitutional Council was informed by a letter to the President last night. –
